The Alliance provided feedback on the Draft National Allied Health Workforce Strategy, which was developed in response to a recommendation from the Independent review of Australia’s regulatory settings relating to overseas health practitioners Final Report (also known as the Kruk report). The Strategy aims to address workforce issues in allied health over the next 10 years. Key challenges outlined in the Strategy include increasing demand for allied health services, workforce shortages and retention issues particularly to grow, support and retain the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander workforce and the regional, rural and remote allied health workforce. The Alliance emphasised the need for rural-specific policies, incentives and further opportunities for rural clinical practice, equitable educational pathways, and strong health workforce data and planning to capture differences between metro, regional, rural and remote locations.
