In the course of our work, the Alliance receives feedback from organisations across Australia about the plight of rural health in many communities. In the time I have been in the position of Chief Executive, I have been made aware of many instances where local government has been required to directly finance the delivery of essential health care services. In some cases, this has meant the local council has fully taken over the running and administration of a primary healthcare service, and in other cases local government has contributed support through part financing, sharing of administration, and providing the premises or other physical or administrative infrastructure.
