Australians in rural areas typically have shorter lifespans, higher incidence of disease and injury, and less access to and use of health services compared to those living in major cities. The poorer health outcomes in these areas can stem from a range of factors, including cost of living, lifestyle differences, social and geographical isolation, educational and employment disadvantages, and limited access to, and use of, health services compared to those living in major cities.
The Alliance commends the efforts to update these guidelines, particularly in ways that aim to improve outcomes for underserved communities, including those in rural areas. This submission focuses on the key changes to the Draft ACS Guidelines, as they align with the Alliance’s advocacy priorities – equitable access for the 30% of population living in rural Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, workforce sustainability, and technology in healthcare.
