In the sprawling landscapes of Queensland, where vast distances stretch between communities, delivering healthcare poses unique challenges. Enter CheckUP, a not-for-profit organization committed to enhancing the health and well-being of some of Australia’s most isolated residents. CheckUP's innovative strategies and strong partnerships have established its presence in over 170 communities, revolutionising rural health services through both leadership and actionable initiatives.
In an effort to address the complex demands of rural health delivery, CheckUP launched an innovative training program titled "Going all OUT for Outreach." This online micro-credentialing course, supported by the Queensland Government, was crafted by health professionals actively involved in outreach across Queensland. The program is designed to bolster the skills and knowledge of health service providers and facility staff across regional Australia, ensuring they are equipped to handle the intricacies of outreach health services.
Ann Maree Liddy, CEO of CheckUP, shares her enthusiasm for the initiative, describing it as a unique educational experience that enhances the capacity of healthcare professionals to deliver essential services in remote areas. “Delivering health services in regional areas is incredibly rewarding, but also presents significant challenges," she explains. "We've collaborated with our network of providers to create an engaging, interactive, and free online course packed with practical tips to enhance healthcare delivery."
The "Going all OUT for Outreach" program is structured around three core objectives: enhancing local health service delivery, ensuring timely responses by rural health workers, and addressing the uneven distribution of health professionals in Queensland. The program focuses on three critical training areas—Onboarding, Upskilling, and Teaching (OUT)—which include practitioner health and safety, outreach readiness, and multi-disciplinary teamwork.
Participants engage in comprehensive training modules designed to make them "outreach ready," capable of undertaking skills assessments, and proficient in supporting students on clinical placements. The program not only upgrades the skills of existing healthcare workers but also aims to attract and retain new talent in rural and remote locations.
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the engaging nature of the course and its relevance to their daily work environments. By equipping healthcare professionals with the right tools and knowledge, CheckUP is not just improving individual service delivery but is also enhancing the overall health infrastructure of rural Queensland.
This initiative represents a pivotal shift in addressing the healthcare disparities faced by remote communities. As CheckUP continues to build on these educational foundations, the hope is that more health professionals will be drawn to and remain in these critical roles, fostering a sustainable and resilient rural health network.
