The 2016 National Aged Care Staffing Skills Mix Project Report identifies that the evidence based minimum care requirement and skill mix to ensure safe residential and restorative care is Registered Nurse (RN) 30%, Enrolled Nurse (EN) 20% and Personal Care Worker 50%.
Unregulated Health Workers form a large part of our aged care workforce, especially in rural and remote areas. Formal training and education is limited due to tyranny of distance and financial cost. A national standardised learning framework for these care workers, which focuses on skills and competencies that align with the new Quality Standards instead of qualifications, would ensure a minimum standard of safe, quality aged care service delivery.
