Aboriginal women are leading the way in the call for 'birthing on country'. For indigenous women this provides generational connection to country and potential for cultural healing as well as multiple social benefits. All women deserve the opportunity to stay in their own communities to birth. Midwives and GP obstetricians can achieve this across Australia in continuity of care models with improved outcomes for mothers, babies and fathers, and significant financial and social benefits. This keeps women close to the supports of extended family and friends and prevents separation from other children. Midwives would absolutely rise to the demand in rural areas. Prioritise midwife / GP obstetrician/ aboriginal health worker teams in all rural and remote areas.
