15NRHC Recommendation - 03/26/2019 - 14:01

With an estimated 20,000 new cases per year Australian Lyme disease patients are undiagnosed, misdiagnosed and untreated, resulting in a significant health burden, socially and financially. We recommend the National Rural Health Alliance support immediate national action for this disease cohort including investments in a national awareness and prevention program, a comprehensive package of supports for patients, medical education on tick-borne illness, and patient focused research.

I am by no means an ID specialist, but my understanding is that that there is still little evidence that Lyme disease is present in Australia outside of overseas travel (unless something has been presented that I am not aware of). That is not to discredit or disbelieve those who present with signs and symptoms, but the culprit is not necessarily clear. I do believe that chronic and undiagnosed illnesses need to be treated with respect and support from clinicians and therapists.
