Given the evidence demonstrating the impact of active research participation on health and wellbeing of rural Australians, we recommend:
1. Increased funding for rural research, to improve patient outcomes in regional communities.
2. Establishing and supporting academic and research centres integrated with community services to improve rural health services and patient outcomes and ensure communities remain sustainable and vibrant.
3. Support indigenous communities participation in research relating to issues affecting their own communities.
4. Recognise the importance of research in rural clinical settings in shaping better health outcomes for those communities, with appropriate support and incentives for healthcare and medical professionals to collaborate within rural settings.
