15NRHC Recommendation - 03/25/2019 - 21:50

Climate change is real and affecting rural communities already. There needs to be non-partisan commitment to funding locally informed adaptation plans, for rural communities. Different crops, different industries, different health risks, new environmental threats etc need to be considered, researched and new things trialled. Drought funding should be considered as part of this planning process.

Yes - adaptation to climate change needs to be linked to climate change mitigation. There's no point adapting by setting up air-conditioning for all if it is powered by fossils fuels that are aggravating the underlying cause. Drought funding should contribute to a just transition to a carbon neutral economy. Much of our agriculture is unsustainable and unjustified as the climate changes. Many rural people need to move to new industries.
