Anna Barwick, creator of PharmOnline.
PharmOnline is the first pharmacist-led telehealth service in Australia that aims to provide 24/7 remote access to experienced health professionals. PharmOnline helps to reduce harm from medications through support from the medication experts: pharmacists. PharmOnline solves the problem of access to convenient medication and health advice for people who are isolated or time-poor by offering online video telehealth access to pharmacist advice and care. Using a fee-for-service model, we reduce the pressure on taxpayer-funded health care in Australia.
PharmOnline is particularly valuable to people who are geographically or socially isolated and are unable to easily access their local community pharmacy or other health services in a timely manner. The PharmOnline pharmacists can review medication, work through a treatment plan or refer a person to local health providers if required. They are available to help solve health issues and empower families to understand and safely use medication. PharmOnline is working with integratedliving (who provide in-home aged care and disability support to rural, regional and remote Australians) and the Priceline Pharmacy group to integrate with their SiSU health stations.
Indispensable, PharmOnline’s podcast, is now available through the PharmOnline website or on Apple Podcasts and Spotify. Indispensable topics include men’s and women’s health issues, medications in breastfeeding and perinatal mental health. Each episode is targeted at the general public and includes medication management tips.
The creator of PharmOnline, Anna Barwick, is a registered, experienced clinical pharmacist in hospital, aged care and community settings, with a particular focus on rural practice. She now works as a university academic completing her PhD. Anna was named NSW Pharmacist of the Year in 2021 by the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.
PharmOnline has been recognised as the Outstanding Start Up in the New England North West region and was also awarded runner up in the NSW Mumpreneur Digital Innovation award this year. The concept for PharmOnline came about during the COVID-19 lockdowns, when many health professionals were unable to see their clients face-to-face. PharmOnline was launched in August 2020 to enable the public to speak to an experienced pharmacist in the privacy of their own home.
Pharmacists at PharmOnline are qualified consultant home medication review pharmacists with over 40 years of experience between them. All have worked in community pharmacy and a number of the team are also current hospital and general practice pharmacists.
The PharmOnline team are available after hours for individual consultations or for telehealth medication reviews during the week.
