In February 2025, a researcher set out to capture this hidden danger. Using a small, low-cost sensor, she monitored the air temperature inside a car parked in an unshaded lot—a common scenario in Alice Springs where windows remain closed to keep out snakes and prevent theft. Hung on the back seat to avoid direct sunlight, the sensor recorded temperatures on four different days over two weeks.
The results were startling. While the highest daily temperature reported by BoM barely exceeded 44°C, the car’s interior reached a scorching 70°C. During the hectic afternoon school pick-up period—from roughly 2:30 to 3:30 pm—temperatures inside the car frequently climbed into the 50-60°C range. Even after running the air conditioner for 15 to 20 minutes, the car’s interior stubbornly stayed above 40°C, a delay in cooling that could prove fatal.
The researcher noted that such intense heat takes a toll not only on physical health but also on mental well-being. Moreover, hot car seats and surfaces pose a severe risk of burns for young children—a hazard compounded for those without access to well-maintained, air-conditioned vehicles, or who must walk or cycle during peak heat.
Adding to the problem, many school parking areas lack proper shading. In Alice Springs, the risk of car theft forces parents to turn off engines, leaving cars to bake under the sun. With limited shaded walkways, both parents and children face prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures.
At a policy level, experts call for investments in shaded structures for both vehicles and pedestrians, along with seasonal adjustments to school schedules—such as shifting pick-up and recess times—to reduce heat stress. Some Middle Eastern countries have already adopted such measures. In the meantime, simple steps can help: using car sunshades, keeping windows slightly ajar when safe, briefly rolling down windows after starting the car to let hot air escape, applying evaporative cooling with wet cloths, and routinely checking surface temperatures on child car seats can all reduce the risk of burns.
