The Starlight Children’s Foundation provides the Captain Starlight program, a creativity-based initiative that supports children's healthcare across Australia in various accessible formats. Designed to reduce the loneliness, pain, and stress often associated with illness or hospitalisation, the program engages children and their families in creative and playful activities with Captain Starlight, a professional, trained performer. By utilising imagination, play, and performance, these superhero costumed Captains provide essential support and distraction during appointments and clinics, creating a more positive healthcare experience for many children and young people.
In paediatric hospitals, Captain Starlight interacts with children in the Starlight Express Room, a treatment-free zone dedicated to creativity and well-being. These interactions also extend to wards and clinic waiting areas. The "Starlight Connections" program brings Captain Starlights on the road to visit children in regional hospitals. In partnership with clinical teams, Captains also visit remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities as part of the "Healthier Futures Initiative," bringing creativity in a culturally sensitive way to an often-intimidating medical experience. This remote program relies on partnerships with traveling clinics, local communities, and the individual needs of the children. The face-to-face Captains program is complemented by an online space called "Planet Starlight," where sick children across Australia can virtually interact with Captains and engage in creative activities.
Recognising that each child is unique, Captain Starlights use skills in clowning and improvisation to tailor each interactive performance to the child's needs. This approach not only provides a positive and playful distraction from treatment or illness but also allows children to develop a greater sense of agency over their medical experience, potentially leading to improved long-term health outcomes.
A recent study found that participating in these interactive performances benefits children by improving communication with adults, providing a safe space to express emotions, offering an escape from treatment and pain, and promoting greater calm and relaxation.
Beyond these benefits for children and their families, Captain Starlight performances have a positive impact on the broader healthcare network. These performances and interactions may contribute to reductions in medication use, hospital stays, symptoms of illness and stress, and improvements in staff satisfaction, retention, and recruitment—similar to the impact of comparable programs in the UK.
One of the Captains' great skills is their ability to adapt to different environments. In remote area clinics, often held in simple conditions without the resources found elsewhere, Captains rely on their creativity and performance background to improvise and utilise whatever resources are available. This might involve creating songs or artworks with the children based on the local language or using animals, local stories, and legends as the basis for crafts, games, or activities.
A recent report by Social Ventures Australia on the Healthier Futures Initiative examined the impact of the Captain Starlight program and its use of arts, creativity, and performance to engage this vulnerable population in important screening and treatment programs. The report concluded that "Captain Starlight engages kids through music and play, creating a positive healthcare experience and boosting their participation. When healthcare participation increases, health outcomes improve. Multiple program evaluations demonstrate that Starlight Captains encourage and increase children's participation in early diagnosis and treatment, positively impacting the Australian healthcare system."
An additional benefit of the Captain Starlight program's reach and the superhero costume and performance style is the sense of consistency and comfort it provides when a child must leave a remote community for treatment at a major paediatric hospital. The familiarity of the Captains and their creative, playful interactions can help alleviate feelings of fear and isolation.
