Culturally safe communication

Cancer Australia has released Culturally safe communication skills – tips for non-Indigenous health professionals, comprising a series of short videos and a key messages tip sheet covering the cancer journey from diagnosis and delivering bad news through to managing recurrent, residual and metastatic disease.

Medical oncologists provide practical advice on how they communicate in a culturally safe way with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander patients, families and carers. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officers, Health Workers and Cancer Care Co-ordinators also discuss how they support medical specialists and patients alike and providing further advice on communicating in a culturally safe way with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
