Australia's health system needs re-balancing: a report on the shortage of primary care services in rural and remote areas

15 January 2011

This NRHA report summarises the findings of the AIHW report it commissioned, “Australian health expenditure by remoteness”, published in January 2011. The Alliance analyses PBS data further, considers aged care data and estimates recurrent primary care costs beyond Medicare and hospital services data. The conservative estimate made by the Alliance of a primary care deficit for rural and remote Australia of more than $2.4 billion is discussed and recommendations for improvement are made.
