Below you will find details of four pre-conference workshops available for delegates to attend on the Sunday prior to the official Conference opening session. You can register for these Workshops at the same time as registering for the Conference. Standing up for rural kids: giving a voice to the needs of rural children
National Rural Health Alliance / Childrens Healthcare Australasia17 April 2016, 10am - 4pm, Ellery A, Alice Springs Convention Centre
This pre-conference Workshop will consider how the needs of rural infants and children can be better recognised and met through data and analysis, through institutional and regulatory action, and through public and media consciousness.
Megan Mitchell, Children's Commissioner, will argue that engagement with children should be normal. Nigel Stewart, Regional Paediatrician, will point out what can go wrong if kids are not properly represented. How are Volunteer Advocates for vulnerable children trained and supported?
Who advocates for rural children in care and in the justice system? What can be done in school and community settings to magnify the voice of young people? Which local government Councils have the most child-friendly arrangements for planning and managing children's services and infrastructure?
Recommendations will be developed using the innovative online platform, the Sharing Shed, to go forward to the main Conference. Agreed proposals will be put to Ministers and Governments and backed by Children's Healthcare Australia and the National Rural Health Alliance.

Therapeutic Play Skills Workshop
Charles Darwin University17 April 2016, 10.30am - 12.30pm and 1.30pm - 3.30pm, Ellery B, Alice Springs Convention Centre
This workshop will provide participants with an understanding of current practices in Play Therapy Skills. The workshop will provide information on current research and practices being used with in Northern Australia in remote and regional areas. The workshop will also provide participants with an understanding of where Play Therapy is currently provided in Northern Australia on a regular basis.
Participants will gain a greater understanding of what Play Therapy is and what a Play Therapy set up can look like in both mobile settings and in fixed room settings. They will be provided with a small variety of skills that they can implement within their work to support their connections with children; and will be given an understanding of how they are able to link into further studies.

Managing bronchiolitis in rural areas: what is current best practice?

This session will discuss the most recent evidence available about the treatment of bronchiolitis, with a particular emphasis on practice in rural and remote areas.
Can the admission of neonates and children with bronchiolitis be avoided? What is the role of High Flow treatment? Are there recommendations that can be made to
improve rural treatment?

Early diagnosis of developmental issues for children in rural and remote areas

This workshop will explore childhood developmental and behavioural issues and the best steps to take to ensure they are streamed to the right people and dealt with in the most appropriate manner. It will be a collaborative session where the issues, as well as potential solutions, are explored.
