Katherine elder's post-retirement 'second life' helping homeless men with health issues

When Francis Hayes was diagnosed with a heart condition in his late 50s, he quietly resigned himself to an imminent death.

"I thought it was the end for me," Mr Hayes said.

"I thought: 'I've been there, done that, and it doesn't matter if I go'."

Fifteen years later, Mr Hayes is healthy, sober and enjoying a "second life" helping homeless Indigenous men from out the back of a shed in the Northern Territory country town of Katherine.
